How to Hard Refresh Your Browser

A hard refresh forces your browser to reload a page completely, ignoring any saved (cached) files. It's a quick, genuinely useful computer skill that fixes a surprising range of "the page looks wrong" or "this isn't updating" issues — on any website, not just TeachSpark.

When to try it

  • A page looks outdated or shows old content.
  • Something you just created isn't appearing.
  • A button, image, or layout looks broken.
  • A page is behaving strangely and a normal refresh didn't help.

The keyboard shortcuts

| Platform | Shortcut | |----------|----------| | Windows / Chromebook | Ctrl + Shift + R | | Mac | Cmd + Shift + R |

Just hold those three keys down at the same time while you're on the page you want to refresh.

You can also trigger a hard refresh from your browser menu: right-click the reload button in Chrome and choose "Hard Reload" or "Empty Cache and Hard Reload."

Why it works

Your browser saves copies of websites (images, scripts, and styles) so pages load faster next time. Most of the time that's helpful — but when a website updates, your browser may still show the old saved version. A hard refresh clears those saved files for the page you're on and forces a fresh download.

A regular refresh (F5 or the reload button) asks the browser to reload, but it may still reuse some cached files. A hard refresh ignores the cache entirely — which is why it fixes things a normal refresh doesn't.

This works everywhere

Hard refresh isn't a TeachSpark trick — it's a general browser skill. It works on every website: Google Classroom, YouTube, your gradebook, your email, news sites, anywhere. Once you know it, you'll reach for it all the time.

Share it with your students too — it solves a lot of "the page isn't working" complaints before they ever reach you.
